Only six members of the pride were seen during the one sighting of them this month. Present were four sub adult males and two sub adult females. Judging by the tracks its looks like must of had a run in with the Eyrefield pride during the night and possibly split up. That afternoon the members of the pride had moved off. This pride has done exceptionally well and it’s a shame we don’t see them much anymore.

The Selati pride made two appearances this month, the interesting thing is not that they made an appearance but rather where they made it. The pride holds a large territory to the west of the southern parts of Mala Mala and when they are seen on Mala Mala it is normally on our western boundary and occasionally up to the western bank of the Sand River. However on the two occasions that this pride were seen this month they crossed over the river and moved a far way onto Mala Mala and well into the Eyrefield pride’s territory. The first time they were seen they were not far off of the Eyrefield pride, both prides were in the area sleeping a way off and it seemed that both were oblivious to each other. The second occasion the pride killed an adult female Kudu at Lower Kapen crossing which is in the northern part of Mala Mala east of the Sand River again. There are sections in the central parts of Mala Mala that lay unclaimed by lions; maybe they are looking to expand. But the most logical explanation would be due to the river being low, it is easier for them to cross and look further a field for food, thus they did not spend more the 24 hours on the property.

This pride was only seen once this month and they were right on the border of our property, maybe as winter develops they might spend a little more time on Mala Mala, closer to the Sand River, for water and in search of the large herds of buffalo. They spent most of the morning on the property resting before moving back west were the bulk of their territory is. All the lions were in good condition and the pride seems well settled with no effect from the change in power to the north between the Mlowathi males and the 5 new male lions.

Two adult members of the Selati pride were seen around Beaumont’s hippo pools on two occasions. They looked healthy and in excellent condition but both times they crossed the river and the sightings ended. The encounters were encouraging though and hopefully in the coming winter the pride will return to the river and back to Mala Mala.

After almost a years absence this pride was spotted for the first time last month and again once this month. They have moved along way west trying to fill a void left by the departure of the Sand River and Castleton prides but now it seems they are coming back east again. This is likely due to pressure by other males, as the golf course males have seemingly abandoned this pride. Lets hope this coming winter sees the return of the Selati pride to Mala Mala.

There was one sighting of this pride towards the middle of the month. This pride hasn’t been seen since February last year and so many rangers made a special trip south to view them. All fourteen members are still alive and kicking and all the cubs are doing exceptionally well. The pride got active and moved south along our western border and weren’t seen again.
