September 2009

(11 years) (0 sightings)

There were no sightings during the month. It seems this old male has died, as he hasn’t been seen in almost a year. Once one of the most powerful leopards to have walked Mala Mala he dominated the entire northern half of the property, from the windmill to west street bridge, and from Mlowathi dam to Clarendon dam. He has sired many offspring in his time and it is with sadness that we now presume him dead. R.I.P

Making a comeback somewhat he was found on both occasions along the Mlowati River. Looking stronger and in better condition than at the beginning of the year he has now become a regularly seen leopard. Once owning most of the northern half of Mala Mala he has become nomadic having being usurped by the Emsagwen and Gowrie males.

Febuary 2008 (10 years 4 months) (7 sightings)

Making somewhat of a come back this male was seen in fantastic condition, found along the Mlowati River and in the Piccadilly. One memorable sighting had him kill a young impala and drag it to a tree. The Styx pride was in the neighbourhood and picked up the scent of the impala. As one of the females rushed in to try steal the kill the leopard managed to haul it up a massive Jackelberry tree. He remained up there for two days.

NEWINGTON MALE 10 YEARS 3 MONTH
EYREFIELD, MALAMALA,

NORTHERN-CENTRAL FLOCKFIELD
(4 sightings)

There were four sightings of this leopard this month. Since he has started to age a bit he has lost territory to the east and south but still maintains quite a strong hold on the northwestern section of Mala Mala. He has been seen both stealing a kill and making his own kill this month and was savvy enough to avoid his kill being stolen by the Styx pride.
