JAKKALSDRAAI FEMALE 12 YEARS 1 MONTH
1 CUB 5 MONTHS

CENTRAL & WESTERN CHARLESTON, EAST OF THE SAND RIVER (0 sighting of female, 3  sightings of female and cub, 1 sighting of cub alone)

An unfortunate month for this female, as it looks like she has lost one of her two cubs. This month there were no sightings of the female without her cub, and only one sighting of the cub without its mother. At all the sightings the little guy was very relaxed and looking in great condition, while playing happily with its mother. All of the sightings were still around Charleston River Rocks area. She has been denning there for many a years, as it’s proven successful for her.

Finally, after much anticipation, we got a good look at this female and her two new cubs! They’re the main topic of conversation around the rangers room at the moment. We believe the cubs to be around four months old. They are very relaxed around vehicles, both with and without their mother’s presence. To be safe we’ve restricted these sightings to one vehicle at a time. This is because of their age and the fact that we’ve only seen them three times so far. The future looks promising though. The den site is still at Charleston River Rocks, where one of the cubs was seen for the first time two months ago.

JAKKALSDRAAI FEMALE 11 YEARS 10 MONTHS

Two sightings of a small cub on the Charleston River rocks were an exciting conclusion to hours of searching for, and then following, the Jakkalsdraai female, who we’d observed to be lactating. We only saw one cub, which looks to be about two months old. This is exciting news for a female we seldom get to see anymore.

JAKKALSDRAAI FEMALE 11 YEARS 9 MONTHS

CENTRAL & WESTERN CHARLESTON, EAST OF THE SAND RIVER (2 sightings)

Finally another sighting of the Jakkalsdraai female. Two times in fact. The most exciting news though, is that she is lactating. The first sighting we had of her was around Sibuye Drive, but then rangers lost her in some thick bush. The second was when we found her at Flat Rocks. That day we managed to spend 11 hours with her as she hunted and traversed many rocky outcrops. But again she didn't lead us to her cub(s). Where are they? And how many are there? These are unfortunately questions that will have to be answered another time. But the female herself is in top condition, so let's hope this generation is raised successfully.

Finally! The one sighting we had of this female leopard is the first since November 2010. It has been a long while since we have seen this leopard and everyone was particularly relieved when she was seen. However she was not seen with her cub. The cub, now approaching a year old, may well have been left behind while the mother went out hunting. However, hope remains slim that the young leopard is still alive. As winter approaches we certainly hope that this female will be seen on a more regular basis.
